A Great New Book on Prayer

I am so pleased to see that my wife Melissa’s new book on prayer is nearing release: 5 Things to Pray for Your Kids: Prayers that Change Things for the Next Generation (The Good Book Company, 2019).

We have already received some copies, but the book will not be formally released until March 1st.

This will be Melissa’s fifth book. Her others are The Envy of Eve, Walking with God in the Season of Motherhood, Identity Theft, and In All Things.

Several things I like about it:

1. It actually helps make your prayers concrete.  Rather than saying to someone, “Just pray for your …

RTS Charlotte Women’s Bible Study Has a New Look

As many of you know, from 2014 to 2016 I led a women’s Bible study on the RTS Charlotte campus on the book of Romans–42 installments in all.

Starting in 2017, the women’s Bible study resumed with the book of Hebrews.  This past fall, we just finished the 25th installment and plan to wrap up the book in the Spring.

We continue to be encouraged to hear that the videos are being watched by folks all over the country and the world.  I even heard a recent story of someone coming to Christ by watching the videos in California.

For those interested in getting the videos and handouts, RTS just …

What Do Contentment, Identity, and Joy Have in Common? Three Great New Resources

So, pleased to see three great new resources released this year by my wife, Melissa.  And they cover the topics of contentment, identity, and joy.

First, Ligonier ministries just released a new 8-part video series with Melissa on contentment which would be fantastic for Bible studies, women’s groups, or Sunday School classes.

Here’s the summary from Ligonier

What was Paul’s secret, and how do we cultivate contentment in our lives? In Contentment, Melissa Kruger considers what it really means to be content: to place our trust in our good and sovereign

Five Reasons to Include Women on Your Church Staff

A couple of weeks ago, here at the RTS Charlotte campus, my wife Melissa (see her blog here) and I gave a lunchtime presentation on the topic of “Why Churches Should Hire More Women on Staff.”

The desire to talk about this issue was motivated by several things.  For one, Melissa has served in a paid staff position (part-time) in women’s ministry for about a decade.  And so, part of the discussion was her reflections on serving on a church staff and how that has shaped her thinking on this issue.

The second reason for discussing this topic is because of what is happening here at the Charlotte campus.  …

Spurgeon: Ministers, You are the Public Clock of Our World

Every couple of years, I try to re-read two books that have been very formative for my thinking on life in the ministry.  One is Richard Baxters’ The Reformed Pastor, perhaps the most convicting book ever written (other than the Bible).  Each year, after reading it, I am tempted to draw up my resignation, drop out of the ministry, and go sell carpet or something.

The other book, is Spurgeon’s Lectures to My Students, a veritable goldmine of advice and instruction for those of us in ministry (or heading there).   Spurgeon covers a wide range of issue from the call to the ministry all the way to pulpit …
