Great Review of Doug Kelly’s New Systematic Theology (Vol. 2)

Doug Kelly, the Richard Jordan Professor of Theology here at RTS Charlotte, has just released the second volume of his fantastic systematic theology series: Systematic Theology (Vol. 2): The Beauty of Christ–a Trinitarian Vision (Mentor, 2014).  Although one might think there are enough systematic theologies out there, this volume (and its predecessor) are genuinely unique.  In particular, Dr. Kelly engages the patristic writings with a level of detail that is unmatched by other volumes.  Thus, Kelly roots his theological discussion deeply within the context of church history.

This very point was made by Robert Letham in a great view of Kelly’s book that just came out on The

New RTS Charlotte Women’s Bible Study on Romans

In the mid twentieth century, Martin Lloyd-Jones preached through Romans on Friday at night at Westminster Chapel in London.  Before it was all done, his series spanned 11 years and 372 sermons.  Now those sermons have been gathered together in a commentary series on Romans which is one of the finest available. I highly recommend it.

Although I don’t have plans to remotely challenge Lloyd-Jones epic series in Romans, this Fall we began a new study of Romans here at the RTS Charlotte campus.  It is a Wednesday morning Bible study for women in the Charlotte community.  I had the idea for this study a few years ago as I …

By Faith Magazine Highlights the RTS Charlotte Counseling Program

In the most recent issue of By Faith, the magazine of the PCA, there is an article on the new RTS Charlotte counseling program.  The article includes a brief interview with me about the need for, and the distinctives of, the Charlotte program.  The article is only in print version (so far), but I have included a scanned pdf of it here.

The article highlights a key part of RTS Charlotte’s approach, namely that we see counseling as part of the “ministry of the word.”   The By Faith article quotes me in this regard: “Whereas preaching is the public ministry of the Word, counseling can be understood as …

Where Are They Now? RTS Charlotte Alumnus Bernie Lawrence

One of the unique features of seminary is that, unlike undergraduate programs, it attracts students from a wide range of life stages.  Some of our students are right out of college, others are second career folks, and still others have already been in ministry for many years.

The next installment in our Where Are They Now? focuses on a graduate in this last category. Bernie Lawrence (class of 2010) did not acquire his seminary degree before entering into ministry, but after he had already been in ministry for a long time.  Thus, his degree functioned a little differently.  It honed, shaped, and improved a skill set that was already there.…

Where Are They Now? RTS Charlotte Alumnus Jordan Olshefski

While God sends RTS Charlotte grads all over the world, sometimes he calls them to stay right here in Charlotte.  When he does so, it gives us a chance to watch their ministries grow and develop in our own city.

This is the case with the next individual in the Where Are They Now? series: Jordan Olshefski.  Jordan was my TA at the seminary and also my intern at my church (Uptown PCA)–duties which he (incredibly) upheld at the same time.  It has been a blessing having him stay around.

Jordan gets the award for the most thorough answers (so far) to the interview questions (which is no surprise if …
