Where Are They Now? RTS Charlotte Alumnus J.R. Foster

One of the most exciting programs over the last few years at RTS Charlotte is the Institute for Reformed Campus Ministry (IRCM). The IRCM is designed to equip our students for the challenges that are unique to campus ministry–and there are many. The college campus is one of the most critical battle grounds in our world today, and we are please to play a role in sending well-trained men and women to labor there.
The IRCM involves a specialized degree emphasis in campus ministry, as well as the IRCM Fellowship (a community of folks headed to campus ministry), IRCM events and lunches, and more. You can read more about it … Continue reading...
Where Are They Now? The Complete RTS Charlotte Alumni Series (So Far)

For the last year, I have been doing a series highlighting various alumni from RTS Charlotte entitled “Where Are They Now?” In each installment we ask the alumnus a series of questions about their experience in seminary, how it has helped them in their ministry, and what advice they would give to current students. The responses have been very encouraging and enlightening.
There has been no particular order to the series, but we have covered grads from a variety of different eras and who have entered into a variety of different ministries. And I plan to continue this series in the year to come.
For those who want to track … Continue reading...
Where Are They Now? RTS Charlotte Alumnus Carlton Wynne

One of the blessings of teaching at a seminary is seeing the various places to which God calls our graduates. They are called into missions, pulpit ministry, counseling, campus ministry, women’s ministry, chaplaincy, and more. And some are also called into academic ministry as they head towards a Ph.D. program and ultimately towards becoming a professor themselves.
One of our brightest graduates over the last decade has gone down this latter path. Carlton Wynne (class of 2007) did his Ph.D. at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia and now is a lecturer there in Systematic Theology. But, Carlton is not only an academic. Before heading into Ph.D. work he served as … Continue reading...
Where Are They Now? RTS Charlotte Alumna Alyson Averitt

I get asked all the time about what aspects of ministry can be improved in Reformed denominations in America (e.g., PCA, ARP, EPC, OPC). While there are many answers to that question, there is one that stands out: more Reformed churches need to include staff positions for women’s ministry. While the public preaching of the Word, done by ordained ministers, will always be the core ministry of any church, there are many other critical ministries that should not be ignored. And women’s ministry is one of them.
Paul explicitly gives the command that certain women in the church are to “teach what is good, and so train the young women” … Continue reading...
Where Are They Now? RTS Charlotte Alumnus Bernie Lawrence

One of the unique features of seminary is that, unlike undergraduate programs, it attracts students from a wide range of life stages. Some of our students are right out of college, others are second career folks, and still others have already been in ministry for many years.
The next installment in our Where Are They Now? focuses on a graduate in this last category. Bernie Lawrence (class of 2010) did not acquire his seminary degree before entering into ministry, but after he had already been in ministry for a long time. Thus, his degree functioned a little differently. It honed, shaped, and improved a skill set that was already there.… Continue reading...
